How to Reconcile Scanned Bank Statements in Under 5 Minutes

Forensic accounting and tax preparation often require working with scanned, low-contrast, or photocopied bank statements. Standard optical character recognition (OCR) tools read pages left-to-right, often mixing columns and causing balance reconciliation errors. Here is how to parse and reconcile statements efficiently.

The Challenge of Scanned Documents

Unlike digital statements, scanned PDFs are flat image documents. The computer cannot read the text cells. When a statement contains empty cells—such as when a deposit row has no debit value—standard OCR engines collapse the empty space, causing subsequent numbers to slide into the wrong column.
